Thanksgiving Traditions for the Family

Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest celebrations that we observe. In fact, in the US and Canada, it’s as big as Christmas (if not bigger) and more people are actually celebrating it. It’s a time set to give thanks to one’s blessings and traditionally to celebrate a harvest.

Nothing is stopping us from celebrating a bountiful year. With all the demands of work and parenting, a simple family bonding over a good meal sometimes is all we need to take a break and relieve stress from our busy schedules. It’s also a reason for us to cook something extra special and get our kids to help us out in the kitchen!

Trivia: Thanksgiving Day equivalent in the UK is called Harvest Festival. It’s traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (22 or 23 September). The celebrations on this day include singing, praying and decorating churches with fruits and vegetables.

Traditionally, the king of the Thanksgiving feast is Roasted Turkey with stuffing and gravy.  Stuffing can be a mix of bread cubes, chopped celery, carrots, onions and sage stuffed inside the turkey for roasting. Chestnuts, chopped bacon or sausage, and raisins or apples are also sometimes included in the stuffing. Then there’s the pumpkin pie which is the most common, but other famous alternatives are pecan, apple and if you are into savory pies – minced meat and carrots.

Here’s a few tried and tested recipes that you can visit when you prepare your Thanksgiving dinner:

Observing traditions with your kids will strengthen your bond with them and will make lasting memories for sure! After a glorious meal, end Thanksgiving night with a family-themed movie in the living room with some popcorn and homemade lemonade. Or why not do a game night? You can play fun and educational games like Pictionary, Uno Stacko or your favorite board games!
